Avaclones

Avalon enclosures have inspired many DIY projects. These projects are summarized under the name "Avaclones", though most designs have not so much in common with Avalons, except for the cabinet shape. This page provides a short overview.

There are also people, who strongly object this cabinet shape as a starting point for speaker building because "it will not become an Avalon or something at the same level", and hence show an explicit lack of trust in these type of projects. Besides commercial intentions, it is always surprising to me that opinions about audio equipment is strongly influenced by emotions and peronal identity, and not based on a thorough description of observations with clear motivations and technical backgrounds. Whatever...

Gydolon

Gydotron made the first Avaclone, called the Gydolon (based on an Eton woofer), and a later version called the Gydolon MkII (based on two Thiel C^2 92 woofers). Both designs are based on series filters. Unfortunately, his website is closed, so details are not available anymore.

Soup

Tony Gee started the Soup project (based on our enclosures). Tony has made 2 version. The first version is based on a C^2 89 midrange unit (combined with the C^2 12 and C^2 220) and a 2.5 way filter. The second version is based on an Eton 8-472 woofer (and the C^2 79 and the C^2 12), with a full series filter. Measurements of this second filter are shown on Jan Decker's website.

The Soup/Milestones have inspired many people, and has been used for many designs:
Jan Deckers, Ligne Ceramique
John Eekels, Milestones/Soup clone
FFF, Soup clone
Jens, Soup clone
Fokke, 4-way Avalone clone
Dennis, Eidelon clone
Rudo, Rudoos
Michiel, a 3-way with other units.
Guido, with an Opus minimonitor.
Montana, with the Apocalypsia.
A German builder, "DesignKlon".
Hi-man used Visaton units for his Visaclone.
A Swedish builder of the Milestones, Hififorum.nu.
An Avalon look-alike with other units by fgroen, also published on zelfbouwforum.
Another Soup by Reinout.
Some Romanion site, that assembled pictures from different projects.

XXDino send me some pictures of his lacquered speakers:

John Eekels performed a nice veneering job (see here and here for more info):

The shape of the Avalon cabinets seems to influence more people:

Sentinel clones

Another order of magnitude speaker is the Avalon Sentinel. Some people have cloned this speaker, either full size or scaled. The first Sentinel clone is the Gydinel, constructed by Gydotron. The second clone, the xXx of Erik van Voorst has obtained had a lot of attention in the Dutch htforum, and applies the diamond tweeters of Thiel. Ruud has simultaneously made a third clone, called the Violators.
